Five ways to naturally boost your immune system

As with all things in life, it is important to focus on the things that you can control. In light of recent news, we have put together a guide of five simple habits that you can adopt today to naturally support your immune system; strengthening both yourself and your community.

1. Stay hydrated. Hydration is essential in all situations. A hydrated body can eliminate toxins with ease and ensure that your lymphatic system is working at optimal capacity. 

It is recommended that an adult female consumes 8 glasses of water a day. These are to be spaced out throughout the day; one glass immediately after waking up, a glass with each meal, one glass an hour before bed with the remaining 3 glasses to be enjoyed between meals. 

If you find drinking so much water difficult, we suggest increasing your intake of water in other ways, such as drinking decaffeinated teas (such as rooibos, our favourite is from Niche Tea). Eating more food with high water content such as watermelons, cucumbers, celery, grapefruit, pineapples, and blueberries will also increase your intake antioxidants which once again reinforce your immune system. 

2. Stay fighting fit with food. Food is the primary method of improving overall health; we truly are what we eat. Plant-based eating from organic sources is not only delicious but also the easiest method to get bioavailable nutrients into your diet. Unsurprisingly green coloured foods such as spinach, kale, greens, and broccoli have been shown to support a healthy gut, which is the ‘command centre’ of your immune system. 5. Focus on community. Check on those most vulnerable around you such as elderly neighbours who require someone to get them groceries. Be aware of your own activities if you live with someone whose health can be compromised or the caretaker of someone. Refrain from panic buying and/or purchasing more that you need as your health is dependent on the health of others too, who have the same needs. If you are not traveling or at high risk, leave the medical equipment for the hospitals who require essential equipment such as masks for surgery whilst supply chains are disrupted. Focus on buying locally and from small businesses that will be most greatly affected at this time.
